Broccoli is a good vegetable, no dispute. But now that scientists have attributed another useful feature.
Broccoli protects the arteries from clogging, which can cause heart attack, sure they are.
This is due to a chemical substance found in broccoli and other green leafy vegetables. It strengthens the body's protective mechanism and keep the heart arteries.
Or in more detail, the substance sulforaphane, which is usually found in broccoli, can "unlock" protected protein which is not active in those parts of the arteries susceptible to clogging, said Tuesday.
The discovery is made by researchers from Imperial College in London.
"We know that vegetables are good, but surprisingly molecular mechanisms, showing why they are useful, have been unknown for years," said Paul Evans of the National Institute for cardiac and pulmonary diseases at Imperial College.
"The study gives a possible explanation why the consumption of green vegetables can provide a healthy heart," added the researcher.
